Folsom gathering celebrates India's Independence Day

Maya Holikatti, a precocious Folsom 12-year-old born in America to parents from the Indian state of Karnataka, is usually more comfortable in Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt than a sari.

Riya Tapadiya flashes a smile in her colorful costume while waiting to perform at Folsom High School on Saturday in celebration of today's Indian Independence Day. The gathering featured an exchange of cultures from an estimated 2,000 people who represented many of India's diverse 28 states.
