Cowboys & Indians shop in Heavenly Village is celebrating John Wayne's Centennial Birthday by sponsoring a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Friends with Compassion (formerly called Compassionate Friends), a support group for families who have lost a child of any age will meet on May 31th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the lounge of the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The purpose of the group is to bring comfort and to help one another cope, especially with holidays and people who don't understand the effect of such a loss over time. Rebecca Phillipsen, social worker with Barton Hospice, who has worked with families to cope with grief at the loss of their loved ones, is the professional advisor to the group.

Coloma Blues Live!, a family, all-day blues festival, is set for June 9 at Henningsen-Lotus Park, off Highway 49 in Lotus.

Entertainment includes performances by Mick Martin and the Blues Rockers, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Coco Montoya, Sista Monica Parker and Albert Cummings.

Tickets cost $30 in advance, $35 at the gate, $10 for ages 7 to 12 and free for ages 6 and younger. Gates open at 10 a.m., and the show starts at 11 a.m.. Parking is $5, with free shuttle to festival site. Tickets are on a limited supply.

The South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge will conduct its second annual Longest Day of Golf on Wednesday at Tahoe Paradise Golf Course in Meyers, where the golfers will play from sunup until sundown. The run that triggered fundraising for the South Tahoe Track & Field Restoration project at South Tahoe Middle School is Saturday. Presented by T.R.4.C.K., A Legendary Run will begin at 8 a.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College Parking area, with registration between 7:15 and 7:45 a.m. The 10K and 5K races are a mix of flat and gentle hills and single-track trail. The course will go along Al Tahoe Boulevard and through forest and meadow, finishing near the former site of the historic track used during the 1968 Olympic Track and Field Trials.

The pioneers are coming to Genoa once again. Visit Mormon Station State Historic Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and see how early pioneers lived and worked. Members of the Sierra Nevada Mormon Pioneers will demonstrate corn-husk doll-making, rope making, leather working (making shoes and moccasins), fire starting (with flint and steel) and period cooking.

The living history re-enactment also includes pioneer games.

A mobile adoption event will take place June 23 at the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and S.P.C.A. office, 1221 Emerald Bay Road. Adoptable shelter cats and dogs will be showcased from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The humane society center is located in the "Y" area, behind Snowshoe Thompson's Ski Rental, between D and E streets.

While the El Dorado County Animal Control shelter is being remodeled, it is hoped that regular mobile adoption events will make it easier for potential adopters to see available pets. Right now there is a fine selection of cats and kittens.

Tarnosaurus the Clown will present a fun-filled hour of balloon twisting and sculpture at 2 p.m. Saturday at the South Lake Tahoe Branch Library. Participants will learn how to create balloon animals for birthday parties, preschool entertainment, or any occasion.

Tarnosaurus attended balloon camp in Las Vegas in 2005 and 2006 and has learned many great techniques from talented balloon artists.
