STUDY SUMMARY
EDCTC conducted a study to identify near-term strategies to improve safety and operations on U.S. 50 and the surrounding Camino area.
To identify possible safety improvements, EDCTC analyzed accident data, performed field observations, and gathered stakeholder input to target near-term solutions.
These improvements may include:

Background: On November 14, 2006, the El Dorado County Transportation Commission (EDCTC) held its first of two public open houses regarding the Camino Area Parallel Capacity/Safety Study.

Since that meeting, the Project Team has been working diligently to identify potential strategies to address the safety and operational concerns along US 50 surrounding the Camino area. To ensure the broad participation crucial to the Camino Area Parallel Capacity/Safety Study process, EDCTC identified key community groups and business representatives to form the Camino Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC).

The purpose of the Committee was to provide policy guidance to EDCTC during the development of the study and to assist in the dissemination of information to their respective groups.

SAC membership includes representatives from the following groups and organizations:

  • Apple Hill Growers Association
  • Camino Community Advisory Committee
  • Camino Heights
  • El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce
  • El Dorado Irrigation District
  • Ivy Knoll Road Association
  • Sierra Pacific Industries
  • Trails Now

The EDCTC has received valuable input from the community and key stakeholders through the public outreach process. The second Public Meeting on April 12 provided the Project Team an opportunity to update the public and gather further input from the community on the accident history of US 50 and potential safety improvement strategies.

These opportunities provided input on the draft report and recommendations that were circulated to the EDCTC and El Dorado County Board of Supervisors to gain direction on subsequent project development phases.

A Summary Report has been prepared by the EDCTC in collaboration with the El Dorado County and California Departments of Transportation as an information piece to identify relatively lower cost, near-term alternatives addressing existing safety issues on the US 50 Corridor in the Camino Area. The purpose of the report is to discuss the issues related to each alternative presented, not to identify preferred strategies.

The Summary Report was submitted to EDCTC commissioners on September 6, 2007 for review and to the Board of Supervisors on September 11, 2007. To view the Summary Report, click on the links below.

The report is a large file to download as a single document. Therefore, it has been divided into sections for best efficiency in downloading. A hard copy is available for review at the EDCTC office. A CD copy of all documents below is available at cost upon request.
