Cameron Park Library Print Showing Features Karen Schmautz
Our camera club,
El Dorado Camera Club
, has been invited to show some of the members photos in the Cameron Park Library. I have the honor of being the first one to show my prints. There is room for 6-8 prints and so I have been poring over my photos trying to find a theme and some photos that would represent me as a photographer. I first thought that I would show my landscapes because it is a library, after all. But, I don’t think landscapes represent what my passion as a photographer really is. I love a beautiful landscape, but in the back of my mind I always think a person would really bring the landscape to life. With that in mind, I’ve chosen several of my portraits for printing and as is always the case, sometimes they look great on the computer screen, but when they are printed, I find things that I don’t like. So, I’m printing a few extra just in case.

Angel Flight West Flies Iraq War Veteran from Cameron Park to Van Nuys Airport for Reconstructive Surgery
Angel Flight West
did fly Michael Briggs, a wounded and disfigured veteran of the Iraq War, from Cameron Park, CA to Van Nuys Airport, CA. Michael will then receive a surgical reconstruction consultation. The volunteer pilot of the flight will be Charlie Finkel, fellow war veteran and burn survivor. Finkel says, "It means quite a bit to me. I was burned and know first hand how it affects people. I was treated by Richard Grossman at the Burn Center, so being part of this [Angel Flight West] mission is extra special."
Michael Briggs was hit by an IED while serving in Iraq in March of 2006, suffering burns over his face, shoulders, back and hands while defusing another IED just four feet away. Previous military-provided skin grafts on his nose and face crack and bleed when exposed to sunlight. The non-profit organization Iraq Star is arranging the consultation and surgery with the hope of allowing Michael Briggs to fulfill his dream of surfing.

Effort to Resurrect Japanese America’s ‘Plymouth Rock’ Underway
PLACERVILLE, Calif. There is a relative calmness in these El Dorado
Hills. It is far removed from the pandemonium of the Gold Rush that swamped the
area a century and-a-half earlier, and a world away from the daily hustle and
bustle of San Francisco’s Japantown.
Yet don’t let the lush rural surroundings and lack of chain stores fool you. Nestled between Placerville and Coloma the latter town just two miles north where gold was discovered by John Marshall in 1849 is a plot of land that has been referred to as the Japanese American Plymouth Rock. A literal gold mine of Japanese American history.
Next to the Gold Trail Elementary School lies the former site of the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony, which although it lasted for only two years remains the first sizeable settlement of Japanese immigrants in the United States. For Japanese Americans, this is our Jamestown.
