Forest Service Proposes 10 Year Hazardous Fuel Reduction Plan

South Lake Tahoe, CA. --In a continuing effort to reduce wildfire risks to communities, resources and watersheds, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is hosting an important public meeting on Tuesday, May 1, at the Office of the Forest Supervisor, 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, CA from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to introduce the "Stewardship & Fireshed Assessment" (SFA) process- a strategy to treat hazardous fuels on National Forest System lands within the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Forest Service will describe the SFA process and seek input from the public on the 10-year Fuel Reduction Plan.

The Forest Service is developing and testing a process for designing and scheduling fuels and vegetation treatments across the Tahoe Basin landscape. An interdisciplinary team used a step-by-step process to design, test, and schedule fuels and vegetative management projects to meet multiple resource objectives. This process is known as the Stewardship & Fireshed Assessment (SFA) process. The outcome is the development of a strategic, specific 10-year program of work for fuels and vegetation management projects. This outcome is also very geographically specific, allowing for highly detailed maps that both planners and the public can use to develop fuel reduction plans.
